It is difficult to tell you anything about The Fabulous Medjool Date by Marc C. Paulsen without telling you everything! The author has extravagant praise for a particular variety of date but I know that he is right. I ate this date on long trips to Indio, California and bought them in a grocery store in Loma Linda, California. It is large, plump and bursting with flavor. If you haven’t eaten a Medjool date you won’t know what I am talking about. It spoiled me for all other varieties.When I saw that a whole book had been written about this date, I had to read it. Mr. Paulsen loads this book with history of the Medjool. Did you know that dates have been cultivated by man for 6,000 years? But the Medjool was facing extinction because of nasty disease, Baioudh. There is a fascinating tale of Morocco contacting the United States Department of Agriculture for help. It is very tempting to tell you much more of the story but I am going to restrain myself!
Besides the history, details of the labor intensive cultivation of this date are covered. Richly illustrated this book also answers these questions:
1. Where do the baby date trees spring from?
2. What protective armor does the date tree have?
3. What rodent can do tremendous damage to date trees?
4. What is the best way to store dates?
In addition to all this information, there are 100 recipes for dates in the pack of the book. I really enjoyed learning about this variety of date. Thank you, Mr. Paulsen for writing this book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dates and loves learning.
